The Apprentice...

Geez I have not been updating much at all. Malas ka apa *tone: questioning oneself*

Anyway, the year is fast coming to an end. Nothing big has happened so far, yet. By big I mean anything life-altering. Not that I am expecting anything big to happen, i.e.

Fast forward to today: I am currently in the process of recruiting my little otter to assist me in updating this blog, if possible, daily. Training process has been hands-on, extensive, full of eagerness, and not forgetting fun. So far I am pleased with the outcome. I should be able to reap the results in about 3-4 years time, all things considered.
The Apprentice undergoing extensive hands-on training...

It's almost coming to a wrap up, but hope you have/had a wonderful October everyone! Hahaha

And sometimes...

There was a time in my life when I thought I wanted to be a doctor. So I made sure I enrolled in the science stream class, made sure I pass my Biology subject, made sure I pass my Add Maths, and was pretty sure I didn't faint at the sight of blood.

Sometimes I wanted to be a Radio Deejay. That would've been cool too. Playing your favorite songs on air, becoming one of those radio personality with a voice without having to show your face because you dislike direct communication or insecure about your looks, working flexible hours and still make ends meet...

Sometimes I wanted to be a teacher because my dad was one... A Pastor because saving souls was detrimental and I could relate... A Musician even though I could play just one instrument... An Actress because I could shed tears at will and talk to the mirror like a pro ... A housewife because I wanted to keep the house and raise children on my own...

But sometimes you meet people and things change. Sometimes what you did to get there -- all the efforts and hard work -- did not go hand in hand with what your heart really wanted at the time. And sometimes, confusion reeled in with the tie between your heart and your head. Sometimes some days are better than others and sometimes things were just looking up and in a split second it was gone. At growing up stage, what do you really know what to do with your life anyway?

Well, we can only walk so far, but when you make your decision at the crossroad, your course in life changed. And sometimes you can't go back but move on. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow, for what else can you do? But sometimes it isn't always a bad thing either, sometimes it turns out for the best. Sometimes, not all the time.

There are so many 'sometimes' in our lives that we wish for things to be different. But upon looking at where we end up at, sometimes in 'sometimes' itself we forget to be grateful and give thanks that things did not turn out the way we initially wanted it.

I guess what I am saying is, I accept and am grateful today for what I have become, what I have gone through and where I am right now. I am still a nobody where fame and fortune is concerned, but sometimes, life isn't just about all that. We need to be thankful too and act like it.

It's all part of life, living, live and let live.

Okay, good talk.

Some days are better than others...

And some days are just better with a cup of tea...

Indulgence...

If you're going to have a cheat day, I always say, do it properly and make the most out of it so that should you ever regret it later, it was worth it.

Have a wonderful weekend lovelies!

P/s: A crazy week, and then an anticlimactic week, and then me... setting side coffee in place of tea. Some days I wonder should I continue referring to myself as Coffee Girl?

Side story...

I used to write really good posts... I mean, in my own standards, yes, I'd say they were good because when I go back to reading them, I get this 'wow, did I write that?' reaction from myself.

Lately however, I feel like I have lost the desire to write, to blog, stuffs that involve putting words down. I've lost my mojo.

Or perhaps, I have found something else better to do with my time. :-) than blogging.

This of course, will make me lose my followers, readers, fans (can I call some of you that please? ) and such... but sometimes sacrifice have to happen.

Meanwhile, you stay awesome. I will return when I return. I hope.

Have a good month ahead everyone!

And so it's February...

... and still I am not done being free a bit in my time to focus on writing and updating this blog here. Such promises, still none being kept, or followed through, let alone started on. Tsk tsk tsk.

How are you all doing? I've been feeling rather fat these past few months but still, I am thankful that I am healthy. Fat from all the good food and feeling content just makes me feel at ease.

I've been around town since January came along. Anticipating to be busier as the months unfold etc. But that's all good, just going with the flow, riding with the waves, embracing every moment of truth.

Oh nothing, just keeping a promise that I should enter at least one post a month, if I can help it. This here qualifies.

Till next short update.

Signing off.

Hello from the Otter side...

Oh Hello!

Have I been gone that long?

I try not to think too much about what to write these days because over-thinking things might end up with no writing being produced. Same goes to not giving any thoughts about what to write which will result in just sub-par quality entry. Who wants that, right?

Hence, this would perhaps justify leaving off blogging for a few long dry weeks and nearly two months of hiatus. But I am not one to give excuses since you all know I have an infant who will not be an infant anymore in a matter of weeks -- update: she will be 1 year old in exactly 3 weeks! - so yes, having a baby has definitely changed all my timetables and how I prioritize, and that is definitely not a bad thing. It's a miracle I still can't fathom even unto this day.

But enough about the glimpse into motherhood.

You see, having my time fully occupied has given me less time to sit and ponder about life in general, putting them in words, and publishing for people to read. There are so many current issues I wish I could touch on and yet words continue to fail me. Sometimes I think I am losing it -- the ability (if you can call it that) to write coherently and wisely (if not intelligently). Or perhaps I just need my mojo back, whatever it is and wherever it has gone to. Rome wasn't built in a day neither is a good piece of writing... but that's just me quoting lines trying to make myself feel better.

Check and balance or so it's called: You gain some you lose some. You make some, you give some. You love some and you loath some. You come up you fall down. You live today you die tomorrow. And still life goes on just fine at the end of every day.

Before I get carried away, best to sum this entry in one sentence: I'll be back! * air fist-punch!*

Till then,
Coffee Girl.

And it's April!

Hah. Only managed one post last March. See if I can do better this month.

As a working mom and wife, I can say I have my hands full but there's never a dull moment. Like every new mom, I look forward every day to come home to my gurgling wide-eye infant and my strong loving man. They are like the bane of my existence. When things go crazy at work, I find my thoughts go back to my little family at home. When my spirit is low, I scroll down at photos of my little miracle to get an instant boost. When I feel tired of all the routine, her big innocent eyes will remind me that I have to keep moving on... for her, for my family, for those I come home to at the end of every day.

Does it happen to anyone else I wonder?

Anyway... lately I realized my posts have been a lot about personal journey and recounts. I think I have become a boring writer that I feared to be. Even my words are becoming jumbled up and my vocabularies limited to motherhood, babies, happiness, etc. I know I like reading deep emotional writings that most people can relate to, but I guess I graduated from that along with my single life. And it isn't something I want to complain at all about because everybody deserves a happy ever after.

I don't know where I'm going with this post right now either, but I just want to state that I have changed. Or more like, my state of mind has. And I like it that way.

P/s: An excuse to explain why I write such boring empty posts these days.

Happy Easter Monday everyone!

Yesterday's quick breakie of Hot Cross Bun from Caffe Cino, Kuching Hilton...

Back at work...

[Note: Must update this. It's March. Sorry for the remiss.]

Been 15 days already since I came back to work after a three-month leave. Boy have I got a lot to catch up on and get used to all over again... waking up early, daily wardrobe battle, skipping home breakfast, getting caught in the morning traffic, hair woes etc... etc... etc... Workwise, I just need to refresh my memory and sharpen my skill once again.

The hardest part about coming back to work after a long official inactive existence is not the work. It's about being away from my baby for the first time after spending every second with her for the past 3 months. But I supposed if other working new mothers can do it, so can I. I just have to brave it every day and keep myself busy for the next 8 hours before rushing home to my little family.

Gotta look excited, right? =)

The kind of work I do however does not always include going home on the dot. In fact it also includes being away from home for a few days when the work requires it. I used to love traveling and going outstation or visit new places when I was single, because it was the only way I could escape from reality. The irony of it is of course the relaxing and soul searching part that I used to find when I did get away.

Now... I'm not sure how to put it. I still love traveling, it's just perhaps with a heavy heart.. .what's with it being left at home with the baby/daddy and all. However, if it's a holiday travel together, that would be a totally different thing. :D

How's the baby doing? She's fine! The first month was an adventure as clueless new parents, both us and the baby getting to know each other and setting up a routine (or upsetting a routine hahaha then reset). The second month was independence period, me learning to handle the baby on my own without my mom around. The third month was a revelation... when the baby begins to coo and smile and learning to recognize faces. Her sleeping routine though hasn't changed much.

And how is the daddy doing? He has been such a tremendous pillar of strength for me. Because we're doing this alone without staying-in parents or nannies or babysitters, he has been very involved with Carissa's development since day one. I must say he's such a natural with babies. :D He is even a pro at bathing an infant, trust me. Even Carissa love her bath time, judging from her cooing and smiles when she's in the tub with daddy holding her.

Baby-mommy leisure time at home... pardon the mess...

I miss one thing though... little baby otter moving in my womb actively for the past few months before her delivery. I tell her that every chance I get now. When I look at that adorable lovely face, I just couldn't fathom how such an amazing miracle ever lived in my belly for 10 months. The wonders of God.

So here I am.
Back at work.
Life goes on.
Happy to return.
Have a blessed Wednesday everyone!

Welcoming February ...

Well will you look at that! I only managed one post in January. There goes the resolution to blog at least twice a month this year. Hang on in there. We just done moving to a new residential area and I think my mind is still adapting to the whole new space. Loving it, really. Having fun at it too. Adjusting to stuffs happening in real life is taking a lot of my time these days but so far everything has been progressing wonderfully.

A brief respite.

Am here to welcome FEBRUARY with arms wide open. Albeit a little far behind schedule with these promised postings. My apologies. This is the month of love after all!

If the shoe fits...

So how do you like the MAKEOVER on le blog? Too much? Too kiddy? Derailing? Appreciate the comments. Do let me know...

Rereading those old posts ...

PRE-NOTE: I found an old blog post dating back in April 2008. Back then while still new in the blogging world, I wrote a few amateurish posts. Correction. I wrote a few self-pitying posts all in the name of ranting with the hopes to unload negative vibes off my soul. I’m a little  embarrassed to share, but shame is sometimes an important emotion to feel, I believe. It’s corrective, like guilt. The key is not to let the guilt and shame overwhelm your ability to improve yourself and your behavior.

 ****************
The Worst Kind Of Fool...

… Acts without thinking, gets lead by the heart, rushes in deciding, enjoys the bliss way before the damages start to sink in, waits too long until it’s too late to turn back, blames herself for the unavoidable circumstances, and finds it hard to find in another person what she has always found in someone else.

The worst kind of fool is always misunderstood. Nobody takes her seriously, especially when she’s hurting. Nobody tries to reason with or understand her, they just be.

The worst kind of fool heals harder and longer, if at all.

If I am a fool, I’d be all that. But what kind of a person would go through a life-altering experience and not be moved by it? What kind of a fool would die trying to find a silver lining in the midst of a brewing storm? What kind of a fool acts like nothing has happened when her very being has been destined by what she has seen, done and where she has been?

To all the worst kinds of fools out there… it is better to have loved and lost, than not to have loved at all. If it doesn’t break your heart, it is not love.

Tomorrow is another new day. Take each step in faith. For I believe that everything happens for a reason, for if it didn’t, it won’t have happened. Maybe tomorrow will be a better day to better the kind of fool I am.

Cheers.

POST NOTE: Did I really write all that? Don't ask me what. But I feel like it sounded raw, like a fresh scar from a wound not quite closed yet but itching all over wanting to bleed.  I looked back at what I've been through years ago, and it's reassuring to know that I am still a whole person today, albeit a little jaded. But that's what life does to you. And I thank God everyday that I am able to look the world in the eye right now and say I have been the worst kind of fool and that has made me smarter. And Blessed.

Today is 'Increase Your Psychic Powers Day'

Oct 31st is what I just said a second ago. No seriously. Google it up. If you think you have psychic ability, you know I'm not bluffing. And if you insist you have psychic power, today is especially created for you.

How to increase it? Try this little exercise: Read my mind. If you can. Go ahead. Predict my next adventure. Need a little clue?

I feel a hearty localized big-bang breakfast coming next Saturday. Read my lips. And today's short note is brought to you by a dash of coffee imagination and lots of caffeinated visualization.

Coffee and 'kuih cakoi' with coconut-custard filling

p/s: Fare thee well October! And may the odds ever be in my favor. Amen.

Little adventure in charming Marudi ...

When life hands you an opportunity for an adventure, pack your bag and go with an open mind and a ready spirit. Even if you're actually there for official tasks, that is. Killing two birds with one stone what. So here I am this Sunday morning, in charming small town Marudi, encrypting my short journey via an unstable network, while it's still fresh in my mind, before my flight back to Kuching this evening.

Marudi is a quiet homely town, about 2 hours plus drive from Miri via logging roads, or about 15 minutes flight from Miri Airport via Twin Otter , or about 2 hours plus via Express Boats from Miri to Kuala Baram. Marudi used to be tourists gateway to Gunung Mulu previously, and it still is until today for those who crave more adventure.

 Bound for Marudi...

Every time I board the Twin Otter, my adventure senses go on overdrive. Imagine that. And it was my shortest flight ever because I remembered I was just about to warm up the seat when the pilot announced "We will be landing shortly..." Since the plane flew low the whole time, I thought he was kidding until we actually touched down. Sweet short ride!

Clear low view...

Was it scary? Well only if you think about it. Sometimes when it rains or during thunderstorms, I'd like to say it's still relatively safe. Which is why you should never leave home without praying first. =) But the view from up there is really breathtaking man! You'd be too busy snapping photos and admiring the greenery to even feel scared. The Baram river looks tiny from above and you can see the stretch from end to end.

 Up the Baram river...

Here's a bit first-hand info on the rural town: Marudi is located along the Baram river up north of Sarawak, and is mostly comprised of highland tribes folk, collectively called the Orang Ulu. They even speak Bahasa Malaysia a little differently, more pronounced and with a soft lilt. Same like folks in other parts of the State like Limbang, Lawas, Bekenu etc. where you can hear the uniqueness in their accent if you really listen.

I have been to other small towns in Sarawak and I can safely say Marudi is smaller than Lawas but bigger than Julau, slightly the same size as Lubok Antu. Perhaps as big as Bekenu maybe?

 Marudi airport...

Standard facilities are available, except for well ... fast food outlets such as (even) Sugarbun. But why look for fast food when there are other available awesome stuffs here? Thanks to friends hailing from Marudi who told me all about the famous Marudi Char Kue Tiaw upon noticing my FB status ... and all this while who knew such delicious fare actually exist? They also recommended the Marudi steamed bread (or was it freshly baked home-made bread? I can't be sure...) but I didn't have enough time to actually look for one.

Managed to take a pic with the indulgent proprietors...

Anyway, I googled where we could have the best Marudi fried kue tiaw and found this small kopitiam called Lai Lai Coffee Shop, right next to Mount Mulu Hotel (along Lorong Empat, if next time you want to try it out lah). The unique thing about this dish is the noodle (kue tiaw) is home made and therefore home-cut, so the result is unlike your normal flat and white kuetiaw, but rather fat and thick and cut not accordingly (some short some long some thicker than others). I had the feeling of eating fried carrot cake + kue tiaw all in once. Goes well with a hot cup of coffee (with milk).

Arguing ... No... Savoring life's little treasure...

However, if you must know, mostly Chinese coffee shops sell this fare. I have yet to find a Halal version (we even asked around) but probably there is, we just didn't have time to explore. Perhaps next time? Or perhaps if you do find one, do let me know.

Oh by the way, if you're taking the Twin Otter from Marudi, make sure you check in an hour or so earlier than your scheduled flight back to Miri. Business is brisk and sometimes really slow over the weekend in Marudi little airport, but they're efficient as ever. So they know you by name here. =)

Hey, this just reminds me of all other visits to other small sweet rural towns of Sarawak. Hopefully I'll find the time to write about those soon. Till the NEXT adventure!

Note: No bird was harmed before, during or after this post.

Steady hands sturdy feet settled heart ...

9.49pm on the eve of Valentine's Day. A bit of time to update the abandoned blog before all resolutions fly out the window.

Doing not too bad lately considering the game and the current score. The mind is currently on a semi-recess. The Chinese New Year weekend was a welcoming reprieve, however short and unfocused it may be.

Rushing for sunset in Miri ...

The brain has been on a mental workout since I started work on 2nd January of this year. All the KPIs to list down, record, perform and then measured. All the work-related travel to endure or enjoy, whichever way you want to take it. It has been non-stop since the beginning of the year, but hey... not one to complain right now (at least not to general public on social media network). We take a deep breath every chance we got.

The soul is sunbathing in the glow of a pretty awesome -- and sometimes somewhat unfathomably  amazing -- relationship. My emotion included. The adjectives as proof. Say no more.

Some say love are stuffed cuddly animals...

And the body. Well. Looks like the pretty curves aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Between standing on the feet all day long in 2 inch heels a week ago running around with a walkie talkie during the office gala dinner function, and again while in Miri two weekends ago, and again the weekends before that in Bintulu, it has been ridiculously physically straining. Why that didn't do much, if at all, for the weight, is stupefying. The whole resolution to take the stairs instead of the elevator which started on a good note... went down the drain a few days upon returning to work from the endless journey. Sometimes taking the flights feels like taking a bus on a normal route home to and fro.

Kuching from up above...

Shall not talk about the glorious food along the way, because I'm sure some judgmental side of you (the readers) will put two and two together and sum up that the generous hard-to-shed curves on the vital corners were the results of over indulgence. Yes that too but oh if you only knew how constant traveling makes you get hungry so fast it messes with your meal schedule. Between the next city or the next flight, there's always new food to be discovered, or rediscovered, depending on the company you hang out with or the amount of work you take up to boost the appetite.

Right. How do you say no to this?

It seems that everytime the job changes, the remnants of weight from the previous post gets carried forward to the new. Wow. If I get a dollar for every kilo I gain each time I resign and start a new stint elsewhere, I'd be a millionaire and a half by now. Imagine that.

11.41pm. The ramble ends. This post shall not make it to any newspaper column.Who knew why it took so long to write huh.

11.57pm. I'm hopeless. Zzzzz...

Home and away ...

It's a weekend routine, coming home to my suburban little kampung.

Here's home -- where people don't lock their doors in the daytime and still feel safe. Where the streams flow clearly you can see minnows swimming and chasing baits. Where there are no gates and people still ask permission to walk about anyway. Where neighbours borrow sugar and rice from each other without expecting a return. Where the coffee is always hot and the everyday meal seems tastier  than usual. Where everybody knows most basic things about each other and the other's daughters or sons, and still feel the need to protect their secrets. Where everybody else is mostly related somehow or another. Where the grass is greener but youngsters still leave them for the bright lights of the city. Where the heart is.

The journey home ... now there's that private moment alone to do a lot of thinking about the past, the future and the current present. There's something about driving solo into the sunset that makes a person just feels melancholic and a tad too emotional to understand, or sometimes dreamy and distant. Or maybe it's just me... anticipating the outstretched welcoming arms of home.

Now that I have my own little loft in the city away from home, I realised that that journey home is getting less. And now that I have another valid reason to not come home more often, the sunsets just slowly fade from my memories. Spending more time creating and living my own little world away from the precious childhood memories, sometimes I felt like a little black sheep... that prodigal daughter that the father can't seem to grasp or fully understand... that runaway child that the mother tries to restrain but quite powerless to do so. Except I did nothing wrong other than not come home often enough. Or maybe it's just me... feeling like a criminal everytime I see my parents' beautiful ageing worried quiet faces looking back at me.

I don't know how I could handle it if one of my kids do that to me someday ... finding his or her own dreams and hanging on tight, to the point of them slipping slowly from my grip. Which is why sometimes that's reason enough to make that trip back home because who would want the past to haunt the future quite like that?

No city girl this. The heart has always been in the country ... preferring the quiet moonlight night to the colourful smokie bars and loud music, the smooth streamfalls to the traffic jams, the green and dark forests to the skyscrapers, the busybody friendly neighbours to the self-absorb nearby city residents, the thunderstorms midnight for sleeping in to the midnight movies, tempoyak to all the best rib-eyes in the world, and smiling dirty-hands kids from playing in the outfield to their peers who were more IT-savvy and advanced.

Not that I don't always prefer the other ones nor do I dislike them... it's more like a push and pull between  circumstances and choices. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose, and sometimes we just want to return home to regroup and recover.

This is home, where my roots are, my ancestors and my future descendants. How could I be away so often and not realised how much I miss home?

Or maybe it's just me... wanting to move a step ahead in my life but unsure of a lot of things ... like will that familiar precious home always be there to await me when I do need to come home to rediscover myself? Or will I find a home away from home and never forget the home that ever was?

My father once said on my return to the city, "that is just your second home, but this will always always be your home. Why leave it?" I didn't have the heart to remind him that his willful little girl is now all grown up.

Note: Third week of the new year, and already a first melancholic posting.

Windows wide open ...

Is it just me or is the weather getting crazy lately? Hot and humid. Crazy dehydration playing havoc on my senses, making me a little slow on the update lately. Ah. Excuses.

Been busy with a few official stuffs that got me flying off here and there getting things settled before the pressing deadlines comes a calling. Coupled with that, also been busy updating myself on some personal stuff lately that got me sleeping nights on end with the windows wide open. Weather is hot anyway, and the chill night air helps clear the bad mojo away.

Yep. Crazy weather alright. If only I could install a jacuzzi in my tiny loft. For now, getting that aircond installed in the bedroom begins to sound like a really lovely idea. A reallllllly reallllllly lovely idea.

Meanwhile, Coffee Girl needs to refill the bucket with ice while awaiting the aircond to materialise anytime soon. Happy Sunday my lovelies!

Dear beloved readers ...

Hey, how are you today?

Did I tell you how lovely the day is, despite the weather being hot and humid? Right now it's storming outside, that could be ugly on the road, causing traffic jams right when people are rushing to go home to their loved ones, or to their lonely lives, whichever suits you best. At least I have a place I called my home. My financial is a little bit rocky, but I get by on whatever investment I've put my money in the past few months. My social life is on a decline, mostly because I don't have one to begin with. My parents are hounding me to come home every weekend, and each time I don't, they'll be wondering where their little girl spends her time and with what company or with whom. The works I have lined up on my in-tray are piling up, and each time I start on one, one other comes up out of nowhere that it's nearly uninspiring to see through till finish. My emotional life is like a plate of mixed grill, I eat whatever I can and deal with it later.

Yes, life on the outside if you're looking at me, looks good and steady. I don't whine much, I don't bitch much, I don't complain much, and I don't cry much, which practically makes me sounding weird and almost unfeeling. That's all what you see on the outside. And I cannot argue much on that point either because I tend to agree with you. There's so much that goes on behind closed doors with me that to open the can of worms now is like embarking on a suicidal mission. Better you stay in the dark.

But you know what? I have stopped walking on the wide path to destruction and ceased doubting myself. I have stopped disliking myself for the person I had become. I stopped crying, that's right, I'm human after all. Those were real tears, I should be in movies. That was a pathetic life I led, going from one day after another begging for a rerun and a chance to do better. The only person that was stopping me from going overboard was me. I stayed sane because I kept looking over my shoulder looking for a chance to redeem myself.

And finally, dear God, finally, I got it.

Sometimes the only way to go about life is to take all risks, cut your losses, and let the hot air balloon go to wherever the wind takes it. Quite a risk, but if you don't do it, you might lose that chance forever and you will forever be left wondering.

There are many other things I would like to tell you about, but at the risk of sounding sad and probably misunderstood, I shall have to keep a lot of things to myself. My mother always said that you can love other people all you want, but the real thing that matters the most is that you love yourself more.

And so here I go, loving myself more.

Till then, don't worry if you get nothing from what I'm writing here, I just want you to know that I am alright, I am alive and well, and I hope YOU have a nice weekend ahead.

Signing off,
Coffee Girl

That little sign ...

When it shows Yellow ... you brace.

When it becomes Red... you stop.

When it turns Green... you hit the accelerator.

Imagine one day the system goes down and all the traffic lights turn Green at the same time, what would happen when everyone hit the gas pedal at the same exact moment?

So yeah, picture that and tell me if you got your info correct.

Don't worry when your life is put on hold, or you halt for a breather. You're safe. But the minute you move on along, you're putting yourself at risk.

Ironically, if you don't move on, you'll never reach anywhere. God man, who wants to be safe anyway? Safe is boring. Danger is sane. What doesn't kill you will only make you move on a little further and tougher.

They got it all wrong, didn't they? If we live by the universal colour codes, Red does not mean Danger. Green does.

This isn't a rhetorical question ... but what would you rather be doing, stay put and be safe or get going and live?

Watch the road kid...

So you thought you knew everything ...

About Everything? Because Coffee Girl, who is currently a little free today, is about to set some records straight on some old-standing claims. Today I am just the second voice of Factotum De-bunker.

1. The liquid inside young coconuts can be used as a substitute for blood plasma.
Well yes, coconut water, the juice, not the coconut milk. But only in EMERGENCY cases ok. Remember Jackie Chan doing the emergency drip in the movie "Who Am I?" Yeah, if my memory serves me right. Unless you're stuck there bleeding in the middle of the oasis, then don't try this at home.

2. No piece of paper can be folded in half more than seven (7) times.

Hello, this record has been broken by a Miss Britney Gallivan in January 2002, while still in Junior High. Get your facts right. She eliminated the paper-folding problem using a bit or Math technique and managed to half-fold a piece of paper into twelve (12) folds. And now she's selling books and probably making millions from her little adventure. Her accomplishment was even mentioned in the drama series Numb3rs in April 2005. You go girl!

3. Donkeys kill more people annually than plane crashes or shark attacks.
Well, this claim was cited in the London Times back in the 1987. While data on plane-crashes and shark attacks are readily available, no such donkey-induced deaths has been monitored. In other words, a little unlikely to happen. Poor donkey-lovers are a little mad over this speculation. But hang on, I believe it was mentioned that this claim is to counter those groups having fear of flying or death caused by flying. A little true... but if you're afraid of flying then think of how more dignified it is to die in an aviation accident than to be ass-kicked to death. So watch your Ass!

4. You burn more calories sleeping than you do watching television.
This is at least half true, which entirely depends on the individual. BUT, that does not mean you should head for the bed every time you are free or when you should be working out. It just means you need to get more sleep during the rest period to give your body time to rejuvenate and recharge itself. Getting fewer than four hours of sleep over an extended period of time slows the metabolism. Experts recommend aiming for between seven and nine hours of sleep.

5. Oak tree do not produce acorns until they are fifty (50) years of age, or older.
I don't really care about this one, but in the interest of Science, although the majority of them start producing acorns after reaching 50 years or older, some oak trees have been researched to start producing acorns after 20 years, and some once a decade. But then that all depends on various geographical factors. Interesting. We don't have oak trees in Malaysia yet and some people are disseminating this borrowed claim. I doubt they would even thrive in the tropics, let alone up to 50 years!

6. The first product to have a bar code was Wrigley's Gum.
This is a case of being at the right place at the right time, and the issue is more on logistics than historical. Because according to American Railroad History, the first product to use bar codes are railroad cars in the late 1950s, but it wasn't as successful and the idea was abandoned in 1975, until some local food chain authorities picked up the idea again and implement it on supermarkets. And as history goes, in June of 1974, the first scanner was installed at a Marsh's supermarket in Troy, Ohio and the first product they picked and scanned from the shelf and tested on was a packet of Wrigley's Gum, among other things. So if it had been a can of Campbell's Soup or a pack of Marlboro, they too would have been mentioned in history.

(Oh... I love doing this! Googling and comparing answers and proving some people wrong... ha ha)

7. Venus is the only planet that rotates clockwise.
I am not arguing this fact at all. Here people, a little outer space knowledge for you, if you don't already know your Solar system: All the planets of the Solar System orbit in a counter-clockwise direction as viewed from above the Sun's north pole, but Venus rotates clockwise (which is called "retrograde" rotation) once every 243 Earth days. Strange that Venus is closely associated with women. So hey yeah, we're going in the RIGHT direction ladies. Wohoo!

8. Apples, not caffeine, are more efficient in waking you up in the morning.
On the account of me being a coffee lover, I would have to say that this is half false. But to give a bit of merit to the researchers who painstakingly went out of their way to make this claim, I can just say that this all depends on the individual. Apples may contain glucose that keeps you on sugar-rush borderline, but coffee is a stimulant that quickly crosses over from hyper point to a state of madness. No contest.

9. The first owner of the Marlboro company died of lung cancer. So did the first Marlboro Man. And three other Marlboro Men.
Well, this just proves that no matter how macho you look when you smoke, there's nothing macho about dying of lung cancer. The owner of Marlboro, Phillip Morris, died of lung cancer although how much of that can be attributed to smoking is currently not mentioned anywhere, probably due to lawsuits the mega-international company might hold against you for saying stuffs like that. Darrel Winfield, that good looking macho man up there, the first 'Marlboro Man' (remember him in the black-and-white tv ad?), died of lung cancer, and three other Marlboro models Wayne McLaren, David McLean and Dick Hammer, followed in his wake. What a waste of good looking men.

10. Pearls melt in vinegar.

Maybe the right word is actually 'dissolve'. Well, if you don't want your pearls anymore, pick one from the strand and try this, just for the sake of being a sport. Pearls are mostly made up of calcium carbonate, painstakingly formed inside the shell of a long-suffering oyster. Vinegar is acidic and so basic chemistry teaches us that a carbonate will react to acid when in contact with one. Put a pearl inside a goblet of vinegar, it would fizz, slow-pop a little, giving off carbon dioxide, and leave behind a slightly bubbly concoction of calcium ethanoate, which does not smell all that bad and was believed to be an aphrodisiac in the first century. Fancy that for a Friday rendezvous.
